This report is the result of publisher extensive market and company research covering the Colombian defense industry, and provides detailed analysis of both historic and forecast defense industry values including key growth stimulators, analysis of the leading companies in the industry, and key news.

The Future of the Colombian Defense Industry - Market Attractiveness, Competitive Landscape and Forecasts to 2018 offers the reader an insight into the market opportunities and entry strategies adopted by foreign original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to gain market share in the Colombian defense industry.

What is the current market landscape and what is changing?
The Colombian defense industry is expected to register strong growth in the next five years due to the rise of both external and internal security threats. The significant reasons behind the rise of military expenditure are the threats from Venezuela and rebel forces to internal security and the fight against drug trafficking. This increase is required for the purchase of helicopters, battle tanks, UAVs, and air defense systems as, even though the country allocated an average of 4.4% of its GDP for defense during the review period, the majority of the budget was allocated to revenue expenditure.

What are the key drivers behind recent market changes?
Threat from Venezuela, high crime levels, military modernization, threats from rebel groups, and drug trafficking set to increase defense expenditure

  • The report allows readers to identify possible ways to enter the market, together with detailed descriptions of how existing companies have entered the market, including key contracts, alliances, and strategic initiatives.
  • The report helps the reader to understand the competitive landscape of the defense industry in Colombia. It provides an overview of key defense companies, both domestic and foreign, together with insights such as key alliances, strategic initiatives, and a brief financial analysis.
Key Market Issues
  • Recently, the Colombian MoD acknowledged that cocaine smugglers and leftist rebels had infiltrated senior levels of the Colombian Army, impeding efforts to defeat guerrilla organizations and combat the drug trade. The Army discovered classified military information in computer files of guerrillas from the FARC rebel group, which led the MoD to believe senior military officials may be sharing information in exchange for bribes. In another incident, Diego Montoya, who is the perceived head of the Norte del Valle cartel and has been accused of exporting hundreds of tons of cocaine to the US, is believed to have recruited Army officers to provide him with protection and help his brother, Eugenio Montoya, to escape from a high-security prison.
  • The total Colombian defense budget was US$6.8 billion in 2013, of which only US$1.2 billion was allocated for capital expenditure purposes. Currently, domestic defense firms meet the majority of defense requirements in the low technology area, while foreign procurement is undertaken when the adequate sophistication and technology is not available in the domestic market. Many foreign OEMs consider such a low level of defense expenditure as an unfavorable condition in which to enter the Colombian defense industry. Furthermore, the Colombian government does not currently allow foreign investment in its defense industry, which further prevents foreign OEMs from entering the industry.
Key Highlights
  • Threat from Venezuela: Following the independence of Colombia and its neighbor Venezuela in the 19th century, problems with border security up until the late 1980s triggered serious diplomatic conflicts and overshadowed important bilateral trade. Colombia's relations with Venezuela underwent a substantial change in the 1990s, when both countries began to perceive the other as a threat. During the last decade, under the leadership of the Venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez, and Colombian president, Álvaro Uribe, political and diplomatic relations between the two countries ranged between periods of mutual understanding and tension. Colombia's close relationship with the US also triggered distrust between Colombia and Venezuela. In 2009, the US and Colombia signed a 10-year bilateral defense agreement, which gave the US increased access to seven military bases in Colombia for counter-narcotics and counter-terrorism co-operation. However, Venezuela claims that the US intends to use Colombia as a strategic platform to potentially invade Venezuela. Finally, in July 2010, Venezuela broke off diplomatic relations with Colombia soon after President Uribe accused Venezuela of harboring 1,500 leftist Colombian rebels in its territory, a charge Venezuela strongly denied. Venezuela and Colombia agreed to restore diplomatic relations the following August, and increase security along the shared border to prevent Marxist guerrillas and drug traffickers from mounting attacks or hiding in dense jungle. However, this was viewed as a temporary solution, rather than a long-term peace agreement.
  • High crime levels: In addition to the external threat from Venezuela, Colombia suffers from a high threat level of indigenous terrorism and crime, and has the highest homicide rate in the world. Although the security situation has improved in most urban areas in recent years, compared to the situation a decade ago, crimes such as muggings, assaults, burglaries, theft, and credit card fraud all remain major problems. Despite the government's efforts to ensure internal security during the last 10 years, several criminal groups still operate in Colombia such as Rastrojos, ERPAC, Paisas, Oficina de Envigado, Urabeños, and El Loco. These criminal groups are involved in drug production and its illicit trade, arms trafficking, money laundering, kidnapping, and extortion.
  • The Colombian defense industry is underdeveloped and, therefore, has limited manufacturing and technological capabilities. Indeed, most of the country's defense requirements are met through imports, as the majority of domestic firms cater to low-end defense equipment. In 2013, the Colombian government was planning to develop its domestic defense industry as a source of revenue. However, although the Colombian government has recognized this challenge, it is expected that significant time will be needed to adequately develop the domestic defense industry to be capable of competing with foreign OEMs. Moreover, the country does not have a large number of defense companies that could collectively engage in research and development, or a significant defense research organization under the MoD. Without an established defense industry, the majority of the country's defense requirements will be fulfilled by imports over the forecast period. With the country planning to modernize its military, imports are expected in the areas of military hardware including aircraft, armored vehicles and small arms.

What are the key drivers behind recent market changes?
The acquisition of automated equipment and need for training overseas, along with the threats from terrorist organizations.

  • The report helps the reader to understand the competitive landscape of the defense industry in Singapore. It provides an overview of key defense companies, both domestic and foreign, together with insights such as key alliances, strategic initiatives, and a brief financial analysis.
Key Market Issues
Singapore's defense industry is receptive to both foreign investment, and the establishment of manufacturing facilities in the country. There is no restriction on foreign direct investment, and at the same time low tax rates and labor costs. Furthermore, the country has signed a double taxation treaty with a number of other governments worldwide, in order to prevent the double taxation of companies investing in Singapore.

Key Highlights
  • The Singaporean Government is primarily focused on the acquisition of technologically advanced defense equipment and trades with foreign OEMs in order to secure technology transfers, and training provisions for personnel. This has become a key consideration when procurement decisions are made. In accordance with the industrial co-operation programs which guide all government procurements, technology transfers to the country must be executed in order to develop Singapore's domestic defense industry and train defense personnel to adapt to the new technologies acquired.
  • The Singaporean Government has introduced an innovative procurement method, known as lease-to-own arrangements, which is an agreement whereby the buyer leases the equipment, with a purchase date specified after a given period of time. The government enters into lease-to-own arrangements directly with defense contractors, and the arrangements provide foreign OEMs with an alternative entry strategy, as such companies can offer advanced equipment under such terms.
  • According to SIPRI, Singapore is now the world's 20th biggest arms exporter and registered a trend-indicator value (TIV) of 12 million in 2011 to 76 million in 2012 in terms of volume of exports of major conventional weapons. During the period 2008-2012, Thailand was the largest importer of Singaporean defense goods, accounting for 55.9% of total defense exports, which was largely attributed to the signing of a deal worth US$160.0 million for the endurance amphibious assault landing ship, which was delivered in 2012.

MarketResearchReports.com: The Global Military Fixed Wing Aircraft Market 2013-2023, New Report Launched

Global Military Fixed Wing Aircraft Market 2013-2023
This report is the result of publisher extensive market and company research covering the global military aircraft industry. It provides detailed analysis of both historic and forecast global industry values, factors influencing demand, the challenges faced by industry participants, analysis of the leading companies in the industry, and key news.

Why was the report written?
“The Global Military Aircraft Market 2013-2023” offers the reader detailed analysis of the global military aircraft market over the next ten years, alongside potential market opportunities to enter the industry, using detailed market size forecasts.

What are the key drivers behind recent market changes?
Many countries are expected to replace their ageing military aircraft fleet during the forecast period. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have meant that the US, which is the biggest market for military aircraft and other allied countries in Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Middle East, need to replace their aircraft which have been in continuous use over the last decade. Moreover, the global threat posed by countries such as Iran, North Korea and recently Syria means that nations have to be adequately prepared militarily in the event of a hostile attack.

The US military has undertaken a significant investment plan to phase out its old fleet of military aircraft and replace them with more technologically advanced planes. Examples of US modernization initiatives include the Joint Strike Fighter program which involves the production of over 2400 F-35 aircraft at a cost of over US$392 billion, the production of 79 C-130J transport aircraft to replace its C-130E and C-130H models and 33 EA-18G Growler multi-role aircraft to replace the older Navy and Marine Corps equipment. Moreover, France is also procuring 50 A-400M transport aircraft to replace its fleet of Hercules and Transall military transporters as well as A330 multi-role tankers to replace KC-135 tankers, A340 and A310 transports.

Key Features and Benefits
  • The report provides detailed analysis of the market for military aircraft during 2013-2023, including the factors that influence why countries are investing or cutting expenditure on military aircraft. It provides detailed expectations of growth rates and projected total expenditure.
  • A significant number of countries are investing in the development of their domestic military aircraft industries by establishing strategic alliances and technology transfer agreements with global military aircraft manufacturers. In addition to improving the indigenous capabilities of a domestic defense firm, this provides the foreign original equipment manufacturer (OEM) with an opportunity to cater to a new market. Furthermore, some European countries that are still suffering from the effects of a recession, including France, Germany, Italy, and the UK, are undertaking joint research and development projects to reduce the per-unit costs of an aircraft. Additionally, partnerships between countries that possess an advance defense industrial base, such as the UK and France, aid the mutual sharing of advanced technology.

Key Market Issues
  • Traditionally, North America and Europe accounted for around 80% of global defense spending. However, the global economic downturn, US economic crisis, and European debt crisis are expected to negatively impact the defense spending and lead to defense budget cuts. As a consequence, the allocation for military aircraft is not expected to grow significantly during the forecast period owing to financial constraints faced by most of the leading defense spenders. For example, the US, the largest defense spender, announced defense budget cuts of US$178 billion between 2011 and 2015. As a result, the US government cancelled its C-17 transport aircraft project in 2010, which resulted in an estimated US$3 billion savings. In January 2011,  the German government decided to cut orders for A400M military transport aircraft from 60 to 53 aircraft and is also planning to sell 13 aircraft to foreign customers.
  • Aircraft such as the F-35 and F-22 require large amounts of on-board electrical power. Power demand has been rising sharply, especially for military platforms. Associated with this trend is an increased need for efficient power conversion and distribution, and thermal management systems. High power electrical systems on aircraft flying at high-speed and high altitude present unique thermal challenges both at the application and system level. Although electrical systems are highly efficient, the magnitude of on-board power demand and unique design aspects of on-board aviation systems lead to considerable thermal management challenges. Even if a 1 MW system were to be up to 95% efficient, a total of 50 kW of heat has to be removed without exceeding acceptable junction temperatures. This poses significant challenges to the thermal management system, as it has to remove the total capacity of waste heat with minimal temperature rise at a minimum of weight and volume.

Key Highlights
  •  A prominent trend that is expected to be highlighted over the forecast period is the increased focus on the acquisition of multi-role aircraft. The multirole fighter aircraft market is expected to attract the largest amount of spending globally during the forecast period owing to its capability to function in multiple roles. The US DoD is undertaking its largest ever defense program known as the Joint Strike Fighter through which it intends to equip its Air Force with new F-35 multi-role aircraft. This program is estimated to value up to US$392 billion until 2037. Several other countries including Canada, Australia, UK, Italy, Norway, Netherlands, Turkey, Japan and Israel are also vying to acquire these fifth generation multi-role aircraft for their militaries. Furthermore, France and India are procuring 286 and 126 Rafale fighter aircraft which are cumulatively expected to value approximately US$25 billion. There are numerous models of multi-role aircraft under demand such as SU-30MK, Eurofighter Typhoon, F-16, F/A-18F Super Hornet, EA-18G Growler etc. by countries across the world in order to maintain their fleets' battle readiness.
  • With a number of technological advances that have been implemented in modern ballistic missile technology, it has become possible for countries possessing such technologies to accurately target military installations or critical infrastructure of rival nations in different continents. Also, with the incorporation of stealth and radar evading technologies that have been developed for these missiles it has become imperative for countries defending against such attacks to possess early warning of the launch, the missile's trajectory and other details such as speed and elevation. This has spurred a number of major defense spending countries as well as developing countries to invest in the procurement of early warning aircraft which can detect missile launches and provide accurate flight data in order to facilitate timely counter action. It is anticipated that in order to enhance the quality of information derived from such aircraft platforms, these aircraft may also be linked to satellites. Countries which are expected to invest significantly in the acquisition of early warning aircraft include the US which will procure E-3 Sentry and E2D Hawkeye platforms, Chinese investment in the Kongjing 2000, Australian procurement and upgrade of the E7A Wedgetail platform and Brazil's upgrade of the Embraer 145 fleet among several others.
Spanning over 215 pages, 85 tables and 112 figures, “The Global Military Fixed-Wing Aircraft Market 2013-2023” report provides detailed analysis of the current industry size and growth expectations from 2013 to 2023, including highlights of key growth stimulators.
