According to China Automotive Gasoline Engine Supporting
Report, 2014-2017, it is predicted that by 2017 automotive gasoline engine
market in China will maintain a growth rate of 9% or so, with the total estimated
sales volume exceeding 20 million units.
In 2013, China’s automobile industry saw the production of a
total of 16.792 million auto gasoline engines, a figure that was up 18.2% from
a year earlier, and the sales volume of 16.619 million units, up 17.7% year on
year. In the first quarter of 2014, the output of gasoline engines reached
4.253 million units, rising 7.0% compared with the previous year; the sales
volume 4.336 million units, up 9.6% from a year ago.
In terms of the downstream demand for motor gasoline
engines, the demand for gasoline engines came mainly from passenger vehicle
market. The scale and growth rate of production and sales volume of auto
gasoline engines were virtually consistent with the passenger vehicle market
trend. In 2013, the gasoline-powered passenger vehicles produced in China
numbered as many as 17.648 million units, accounting for 97.6% of the total
production, and this rate would rise to 97.9% by April 2014.
In terms of supporting auto models of gasoline engines, the
automakers in China, whether joint ventures or Chinese branded enterprises,
were beginning to strengthen their self-equipped capacity, putting more funds
into the R&D and production of engines. Against this backdrop, many
automakers found that the proportion of their self-equipped gasoline engines
was presenting a steady growth. In 2013, the sales volume of gasoline engines
in China amounted to 16.619 million units, of which the self-equipped volume
was 10.612 million units, commodity volume 6.007 million units, with the
proportion of self-equipped volume rising from 58.1% in 2009 to 63.9% in 2013.
In terms of market competition pattern, as of 2013, there
were about 46 auto manufacturers that produced auto gasoline engines, of which
the top 5 were FAW-Volkswagen, SGMW, Shanghai Volkswagen Powertrain, Shanghai
GM Dongyue Powertrain and Dongfeng Nissan Passenger Vehicle Company. By
production, the market share of the top 5 were 9.2%, 8%, 6.7%, 6.4% and 5.8%,
respectively.
