Sri
Lanka, officially the Democratic Socialist Republic
of Sri Lanka, is an island country in the northern Indian Ocean off the
southern coast of the Indian subcontinent in South Asia.
It was known as Ceylon until 1972. It shares its maritime borders with India to
the northwest and the Maldives to the southwest. Sri Lanka is a republic and a
unitary state governed by a presidential system.
Sri
Lanka had estimated population of 21.252 million in the year 2016 and expected
to reach 22.137 million by 2022. Sri Lanka’s unemployment rate was 4% of total
labor force, and it is expected to remain same till 2022.
Sri
Lanka’s real gross domestic product (GDP) was around LKR 8993.14 billions in
2016 whereas the nominal GDP was LKR 12147.50 billions. This resulted in GDP
deflator 135.075. Per capita GDP was estimated at USD 3887.49 whereas
purchasing power parity (PPP) based per capita GDP was estimated to be at USD
12262.32.
In
2016, Sri Lankan government’s revenue was LKR 1598.67 billions whereas the
expenditure was LKR 2288.25 billions. This resulted Sri Lankan government’s net
lending / borrowing negative at LKR 689.582 billion in 2016 indicating that
enough financial resources were made not available by the government to boost
economic growth.
The
current account balance for Sri Lanka was estimated to be negative at USD 1.932
billions for the year 2016 and is expected to decrease at a CAGR of 2.35% and
reach USD 2.364 by 2022. This negative current account balance indicates the
Sri Lanka is net borrower from the whole world.
